San Diego County Flower & Plant Association's

Feature Plant and Flower of the Month

Greetings,

The San Diego County Flower and Plant Association is a trade organization comprised of over 200 commercial flower and potted plant growers in San Diego County and their allied trade companies.  Southern California boasts one of the world's largest concentrations of commercial flower growers and San Diego County is the #1 horticulture county in the US.  What better place to find your flower and plant needs.

This monthly feature is to assist our members as well as industry professionals throughout the United States to help locate and promote products for efficient and effective supplying chain.

In addition to these Features, the association's website is a great tool to locate growers of other products.  We have a great search engine with products our members grow.  Visit us at www.flowerandplant.org.

Feature Plant of the Month

Cactus & Succulents

Cactus Succulents

This feature of course has a wide variety of genus and species.  There are so many different types we could write book on the different styles, textures, heights, color, flowers, etc.  In fact there have been books written about this exact thing.  Probably the most common attribute is that they tend to be drought tolerant and take full sun, but like everything there are exceptions.

Cactus & Succulents are commonly used in Southwestern, Desert and Drought Tolerant Theme areas, but it is not limited to this.  With the beautiful flower and foliage colors, they have also been used in mass plantings to give a beautiful design.

Which ever theme or use for your cactus and/or succulent, one thing you can count on.  These plants are neglect friendly.  You forget to water it.  That's okay.  It will wait for you.

Feature Flower of the Month

Liatris sp.

Blazing Star, Gay Feather

Liatris

This plant is native to the eastern and central U.S.  It's flowering season is from June through November which during that time it produces a narrow plume with small fluffy flowers.  The flower color is most commonly purple but there are pinks and even white available.

Generally the Liatris is used as and addition to floral designs, giving a vertical line look to the arrangements.  In addition to the floral arrangement it can be dried with a sealant added to protect it.

The flowers can last 7 - 10 days with proper care.  Re-cut flower stems after you receive them and keep water fresh, replacing every 3 days.
