San Diego County Flower & Plant Association's

Feature Plant and Flower of the Month

Greetings,

The San Diego County Flower and Plant Association is a trade organization comprised of over 200 commercial flower and potted plant growers in San Diego County and their allied trade companies.  Southern California boasts one of the world's largest concentrations of commercial flower growers and San Diego County is the #1 horticulture county in the US.  What better place to find your flower and plant needs.

This monthly feature is to assist our members as well as industry professionals throughout the United States to help locate and promote products for efficient and effective supplying chain.

In addition to these Features, the association's website is a great tool to locate growers of other products.  We have a great search engine with products our members grow.  Visit us at www.flowerandplant.org.

Feature Plant of the Month

Poinsettia

Euphorbia pulcherrima

Poinsettia Red

Where do we begin with this plant?  So much has been written about the Christmas Flower over the years.  Originated from Mexico.  The Ecke family was the key part in the marketing and development that has made this plant what it is today.  It is the number one selling potted plant in the United States.  Red is the most prominent color with about 90% of the total poinsettia sales, but there are a wide selection of novelty colors available.  White, pink, burgundy, pink with white, white with red, pink with red, I can go on and on.  In addition to the different colors there are different bract shapes and characteristics.  Plants are also grown in so many different sizes, ranging from a small 1 inch pot single stem plant all the way up to a large bush or lollipop tree shape in a large pot.

There are almost as many uses as there are varieties.  It can be used as a stand alone plant, table top decoration, mass display planting, arranged in a pattern or shape.  Basically anything you could imagine it probably has been done.

It is best to keep plants indoors with high light away from hot or cold drafty areas.  Water when soil gets dry to the touch.  If they are being used outdoors, keep them protected from frost areas.

Feature Flower of the Month

Oriental Lily

Lilium Hybrid

Oriental Lily

The Oriental Lily is a large fragrant flower used as a cut flower and also a potted plant.  The flower colors come in beautiful variations of pink, white, rose, red, bicolor and many in between.  Each cultivar also varies in height with a range of 6" to 18" in height.

The Oriental lily is used as a mass single variety bouquet or an accent flower within an arrangement.  The fragrance is very appealing and adds a beautiful aroma to any room.

The flowers are often shipped in puffy bud stage and will open up within 3 days.  Cut 1" off the stem under water.  Give them a cut flower food packet and change water every 3 days.  Keep the cut flowers away from direct sunlight and drafts.  Enjoy.
