African Violet
Saintpaulia ionantha

The African Violet is a classic plant for all ages. With the soft velvety heart shaped leaves and beautiful bouquets of flowers, it adds so much to the interior decor. There are so many colors to choose from. Starting with white, pinks, purples, magentas, burgundy, bicolor, fringed and many more.
The African Violet should be used inside. With it's low habit it can be a table top decoration, in a window sill or even planted in a decorated basket or ceramic container. Do not over pot the plant. The root system is small and actually the plant does better with a crowded root system.
When caring for the African Violet, one should keep plant with indirect light. No direct sunlight. Indoor temperatures are fine. If you are comfortable then the Violet is comfortable as well. When watering try and avoid getting water on the leaves or at the crown of the plant. Self watering wicked pots work well. Otherwise put your watering can spout below the leaves. Water when top of soil begins to get dry to the touch. Fertilize once a month using a slightly acidity fertilizer. Many garden centers sell an African Violet fertilizer.
