Feature Plant of the Month
Florist's Cineraria
Pericallis x hybrida

There are two general types of Cineraria. The South African natives and the Canary Island natives. Recently the Canary Island natives have been removed from the Cineraria genus and have been assigned the genus name Pericallis. For this feature we are focusing on the Pericallis genus or Florist's Cineraria. The Florist's Cineraria have a beautiful cluster of flowers covering the top of the plant. Flower colors can range from whites, to pinks, blues, purples, and even bicolors. Traditionally this plant is grown for the late winter early spring finishing.
The Florist's Cineraria can be used as a table top decoration, in a patio planter, or as a mass color display when planted together. With the beautiful flower show it adds an eye catching display to any area.
The Florist's Cineraria is often used as an annual, but it is a perennial in mild zones away from frost or hot dry conditions. Outdoors the plants should be in shade in a loose rich soil that is well watered but not soggy. Fertilize every two weeks.

Feature Flower of the Month
Boronia
Boronia heterophylla

The Boronia is an evergreen shrub native to Australia. It has colorful upside down cup shaped fuchsia colored flowers with needlelike leaves. The plant has a striking lemon scent when the plant is touched or handled. Boronia is cultivated for cut flower production from February through December.
The Boronia is a useful filler flower to add a splash of color throughout the arrangement and with the fragrance it can add a bonus feature as well.
The cut Boronia should be re-cut after it arrives 1"-2" above previous cut. Keep water fresh and add cut flower food to help preserve. The cut flowers should last 5-7 days.
