San Diego County Flower & Plant Association's

Feature Plant and Flower of the Month

Greetings!

The San Diego County Flower and Plant Association is a trade organization comprised of over 200 commercial flower and potted plant growers in San Diego County and their allied trade companies.  Southern California boasts one of the world's largest concentrations of commercial flower growers and San Diego County is the #1 horticulture county in the US.  What better place to find your flower and plant needs.

This monthly feature is to assist our members as well as industry professionals throughout the United States to help locate and promote products for efficient and effective supplying chain.

In addition to these Features, the association's website is a great tool to locate growers of other products.  We have a great search engine with products our members grow.  Visit us at www.flowerandplant.org.

Feature Plant of the Month

Pothos

Botanical name: Epipremnum aureum

Pothos

The Epipremnum arueum (Pothos) is a wonderful indoor plant.  The plant is an evergreen climbing perennial with the lush tropical leaves that add a great Hawaiian/Tropical feel to any environment.  There are many cultivars to choose from solid green leaves, white and green variegated leaves, yellow and green variegated leaves, lime green leaves, large leaves, small leaves and many other great selections.

Pothos has many different uses since the stems continue to grow and will even climb.  Commonly this plant is used as a hanging basket, but can also be used as a ground cover in a shady area, or grown and trained up wood or spaghnum poles as well as grown to cover a wall.

The plant likes warm tropical like temperatures.  For most areas it should be cared for indoors, with indirect bright light ideally, but can tolerate darker conditions.  Keep soil moist, but this plant is forgiving if you forget to water.  There is no need to baby this plant.  Fertilize about once a month with an all around general fertilizer.

Feature Flower of the Month

Iris

Botanical name: Iris spp.

 Iris

There are many different species and cultivars of Iris.  They are native to southern Europe and the Mediterranean region and all are bulbous perennials.  They add a soft colorful look to any bouquet which gives a meaning of wisdom and hope.  Flower colors usually come in blue, purple, yellow and white.

Iris are primarily used as a form cut flower to give shape and dimension to your arrangement.

The care of an Iris needs to be prompt.  The flowers are usually shipped in bud stage to protect the flower petals.  They will open up in 1-2 days after arrival.  They use lots of water and need immediate attention when you receive your flowers.  Remove lower leaves that will be submerge in water and ideally you should re-cut stem under water.  Keep flowers in a cool area away from direct sunlight to help with longevity.
