This monthly feature is to assist our members as well as industry professionals throughout the United States to help locate and promote products for efficient and effective supplying chain.

In addition to these Features, the association's website is a great tool to locate growers of other products.  We have a great search engine with products our members grow.  Visit us at www.flowerandplant.org.

Feature Plant of the Month

Ivy

Hedera helix (small leaf cultivars)

Hedera canariensis (large leaf cultivars)

Ivies

The Ivy is a large group of evergreen woody vined cultivars.  They have many different leaf sizes, shapes, and variegated patterns. They are often sold in flats or pots.

There are many uses for this versatile plant.  It can be grown as a ground cover, in planters, as a stand alone hanging basket, up walls or fences, or even as a topiary shaped in any design you can imagine.

Ivy is a very durable and tough plant, tolerating direct sunlight and dry conditions.  Although in very hot and dry desert climates it should be grown in the shade.  You can use this plant indoors near a window or outdoors.  Water when soil gets dry to the touch and fertilize once a month with a general fertilizer.

Feature Flower of the Month

Calla Lily

Zantedeschia hybrids

Calla Lily

The Calla Lily is a spring-summer blooming bulb crop.  There are so many beautiful flower colors to choose from, ranging from solid colors as well as multicolored flowers.  They are in the Araceae family which is the same family that philodendron and anthurium are in.

The form of the flower spikes are great for a linear modern look to an arrangement or a stand alone design.  With the flower color selection it also an ideal cut flower to match up the colors to anyones color scheme.

After you receive the flowers be sure to re-cut the stem about 1 to 2 inches from the old cut using a sharp knife.  It is best if you cut the stem at an angle to allow more absorption.  Replace water every 1-2 days and keep in mild temperature areas away from drafts, sun or heat.  Enjoy.
