San Diego County Flower & Plant Association's

Feature Plant and Flower of the Month

Greetings!

The San Diego County Flower and Plant Association is a trade organization comprised of over 200 commercial flower and potted plant growers in San Diego County and their allied trade companies.  Southern California boasts one of the world's largest concentrations of commercial flower growers and San Diego County is the #1 horticulture county in the US.  What better place to find your flower and plant needs.

This monthly feature is to assist our members as well as industry professionals throughout the United States to help locate and promote products for efficient and effective supplying chain.

In addition to these Features, the association's website is a great tool to locate growers of other products.  We have a great search engine with products our members grow.  Visit us at www.flowerandplant.org.

Feature Plant of the Month

Ferns

Ferns

This is a very large group of plants.  They have many different sizes, shapes, textures and colors.  One thing that is in common is they reproduce by spores.  Besides that commonality with the diversity out there, you can use them in many different settings to enhance the theme you are looking for.

Ferns can be used indoors, in patio areas and in the garden.  In general most ferns do not like direct sunlight and extreme hot and dry areas, but there are exceptions to this rule.  Plant them under a tree to give your garden a forest theme, or place them in hanging baskets or in trees to give yourself a tropical theme.  Also you can keep it simple and have them in a pot on the patio or indoors as a stand alone accent plant.

To provide you with care on this large of a group would not be wise.  It is best to refer to the plant care provided for that specific variety you are looking to purchase.

Feature Flower of the Month

Asiatic Lily

Lilium asiatic hybrids

Asiatic Lily

There are many beautiful hybrids of Asiatic Lilies to choose from.  Flower colors can range from pinks, oranges, burgundy, yellow and many other bicolor selections.  It makes a beautiful cut flower and potted plant with the compact upright growth and large flower clusters at the top.

As a cut flower the Asiatic Lily makes a beautiful bouquet as a bunch or it can also be used as a accent flower with other types of cuts mixed in.

The flowers are often shipped in puffy bud stage and will open up within 3 days.  Cut 1" off the stem under water.  Give them a cut flower food packet and change water every 3 days.  Keep the cut flowers away from direct sunlight and drafts.  Enjoy.
