San Diego County Flower & Plant Association's

Feature Plant and Flower of the Month

Greetings,

The San Diego County Flower and Plant Association is a trade organization comprised of over 200 commercial flower and potted plant growers in San Diego County and their allied trade companies.  Southern California boasts one of the world's largest concentrations of commercial flower growers and San Diego County is the #1 horticulture county in the US.  What better place to find your flower and plant needs.

This monthly feature is to assist our members as well as industry professionals throughout the United States to help locate and promote products for efficient and effective supplying chain.

In addition to these Features, the association's website is a great tool to locate growers of other products.  We have a great search engine with products our members grow.  Visit us at www.flowerandplant.org.

Feature Plant of the Month

Christmas Cactus or Zygocactus

Schlumbergera truncata

Christmas Cactus

An epiphytic plant with blooms borne on the ends of graceful arched stems of flattened medium green segments.  Buds emerge from the tip of the leaf and gradually unfold into three-inch long multi-petaled and tubular flowers.  Christmas cactus bloom naturally in November and come in shades of red, orange, white, lavender-pink and yellow.  Each flower will last for 3-4 days with the plant blooming over several weeks.

Indoor pot plant or outdoor shade container. Following bloom, the plant can be grown on to rebloom next season. Starting in September, place the plant where it will receive cool night temperatures (50°F-60°F) and at least 12 hours of continuous darkness nightly.  If the plant receives any artificial lighting at night, it probably will not flower.  After the buds form, the plant may be returned to normal indoor conditions.

Enjoy plants near a window or in a patio with high light but no direct sunlight.  If kept outdoors keep plants protect from frost.  Keep soil moist but not wet and fertilize once a month.

Bird of Paradise

Strelitzia reginae

Bird of Paradise

Strelitzia is a genus of four species native to South Africa. It is named after the duchy of Meckenburg-Strelitz, birthplace of Queen Charlotte of the United Kingdom. The genus is known as the bird of paradise flower because of its resemblance to the bird which shares its name.

With the strong sturdy stem you can use this as a focal flower or as a stand alone with it's unique shape.  Be sure to use support such as wire or thick foam.

Avoid temperatures below 45 F. Will show cold damage through brown lesions on flowers and bracts. Can ooze jelly-like substance which may be sticky. This can be wiped away carefully. Soak the flower head in warm water for about 20 minutes to help tight sheaths so that flowers can emerge.
