San Diego County Flower & Plant Association's

Feature Plant and Flower of the Month

Greetings,

The San Diego County Flower and Plant Association is a trade organization comprised of over 200 commercial flower and potted plant growers in San Diego County and their allied trade companies.  Southern California boasts one of the world's largest concentrations of commercial flower growers and San Diego County is the #1 horticulture county in the US.  What better place to find your flower and plant needs.

This monthly feature is to assist our members as well as industry professionals throughout the United States to help locate and promote products for efficient and effective supplying chain.

In addition to these Features, the association's website is a great tool to locate growers of other products.  We have a great search engine with products our members grow.  Visit us at www.flowerandplant.org.

Feature Plant of the Month

Bromeliads

Bromeliaceae family

Bromeliad Valencia

Bromeliads come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and colors and adjust to different growing conditions. They make wonderful interior plants but they grow outdoors depending on climate conditions.

Bromeliads are members of the Bromeliaceae family, which also includes pineapples and Spanish moss.

Biologists have cataloged more than 3,500 species of bromeliads,

with new ones being added all the time.

At least one-third of the species are air plants that grow on trees or rocks, using their roots only to hold themselves in place. They draw their water from clouds and fog, as well as from rainwater stored in the "tanks" formed by tight rosettes of leaves.

In upper reaches of tropical rain forests, these tanks serve as miniature ecosystems, providing a critical source of water for such diverse creatures as birds, snakes, lizards, frogs, snails, dragonflies, beetles, ants, butterflies, crabs, opossums and even other plants.

Scientific studies suggest bromeliads can help improve indoor air-quality as you sleep. In the photosynthetic process, most common indoor plants remove carbon dioxide while emitting oxygen and water vapors during the day. But research indicates that bromeliads behave differently during the day / night cycle, releasing oxygen and removing air pollutants at night. Data collected by the Plants for Clean Air Council suggest that when combined with foliage plants, bromeliads can help
provide around-the-clock indoor air purification.

Feature Flower of the Month

Sunflower

Helianthus annuus

Sunflower

With the increasing interest in ornamental Sunflowers and several million acres of land devoted to oilseed production, the Sunflower is a very popular plant.  The Sunflower is one of only four major crops of global importance  native to the United Sates (blueberry, cranberry and pecan are the other three).  Ironically when the colonists and explorers sent it back to Europe the Sunflower was treated mainly as a garden flower.

Hybrid sunflowers now dominate commercial production as well as ornamental Sunflowers and there are 67 species within the Helianthus genus.  Varieties include the Dwarf which grows only to 24 inches, the Common Sunflower which can grow to 8 feet tall and the Russian Giant which can grow to a height of 12 feet with a large, single yellow flower.   Sunflowers are allelopathic:  their roots give off a chemical the inhibits the growth of other, nearby plants.

Sunflowers are relatively easy to dye as they absorb the tinting process well.  An example of red (dyed) Sunflowers is depicted to the right.

If properly handled, a cut Sunflower will last two weeks in a vase.  Remove bottom leaves, recut stem and place in fresh water.  Replace the water every two days.
